Greetings! Can you believe we ended our 5th year and already looking forward to starting our 6th year in September. Our family opened Harvest Moon Market in 2010 and yes we are still kicking! We have been through a lot of changes for different reasons, but always striving to meet our community's needs and wants. Easy? No. Mistakes? Yes ..a few. In spite of it all we keep evolving and looking ahead with the hope that we are providing a much needed and hopefully appreciated service to all that are interested in what they eat, where and how their food is grown and love supporting the community they live in. As a farmers wife since 1984, I was constantly frustrated when I went to the grocery store or should I say the produce section. I knew of my husband and the other farmers that had awesome fresh veggies growing in their fields, some I would pass by on my way to the store, only to see not so fresh fruits and vegetables from who knew where on display. These days it is a law that the stores must state where the country of origin the food was produced is. Which makes it a whole lot easier now! I laugh thinking back at the poor produce people trying to keep their patience with me, for before this became law, I admit I was the annoying customer asking where it all came from, which had them running back into storage room to read the boxes! Even back then I realized the importance of knowing where and how my food was produced. You see, I know that conventional AND organic food production in the USA exceeds most other countries guidelines. This includes pesticide, fertilization and or chemical use, irrigation and most importantly fair labor practices. Perfect? No... But so much better than the majority of the world. So, with good reason, this came to be our belief in opening a fresh produce market in Bainbridge, Ga. and the start of our Community Supported Agriculture program. We feel that our market brings fruits and vegetables to you fresher and more economically, by cutting down the time and distance from the farm fields to your dinner table. An added bonus we think, is the fact that our fresh produce is certified organic. A practice we take pride in because we feel it is better for our bodies AND promotes sustainable land practices. Better for you, better for the environment! So, as we end this farming season and look forward to the next, please know how appreciated you ALL are. We are very thankful for you letting us be "your farmer". Have an awesome, safe, and relaxing summer. See ya in September!!!
P.S. I will still keep you updated each week for we will be busy growing okra, winding down with our cucumbers, cleaning out the greenhouses, prepping land etc.... oh and yes taking a week off here and there!
